Cleaner neighbourhoods, warmer community spaces and greener local facilities are among the types of projects benefiting from the latest round of Ørsted’s Burbo Bank Extension Community Fund.
In total, more than £127,000 has been awarded to 11 community projects across Merseyside and North Wales, supporting initiatives that improve community facilities, strengthen local services and help create healthier, more sustainable places to live.
One of the projects being supported through this round is Street Champions – A Cleaner, Greener Rhyl, delivered by Brighter Futures, which has been awarded £20,000 from the Burbo Bank Extension Community Fund.
The two-year project will recruit and support local volunteers to become Street Champions, empowering residents to take pride in their neighbourhood through activities including litter picks, beach cleans, community growing projects and the creation of alleyway gardens. Working alongside local schools, businesses, housing associations and environmental organisations, the initiative will also encourage young people to develop practical environmental skills while helping protect and enhance Rhyl’s local environment.
The project builds on extensive community consultation involving more than 540 local young people and workshops with older residents, which identified a cleaner, greener Rhyl as one of the community’s highest priorities. Street Champions will also help identify and report issues such as fly tipping, graffiti and damaged pavements, helping improve local neighbourhoods for everyone.
Over the two-year programme, Brighter Futures expects to recruit around 50 volunteer Street Champions, engage local schools and businesses, and involve hundreds of residents in activities that encourage environmental stewardship, community pride and stronger neighbourhood connections.
Katy Park, Chief Officer at Brighter Futures, said:
“We’re delighted to receive this £20,000 grant from the Burbo Bank Extension Community Fund, which will help local people play an active role in making Rhyl cleaner, greener and even more welcoming. By bringing residents, schools, businesses and community partners together, Street Champions will give people the opportunity to make a lasting difference to the place they call home while building stronger community connections.”
Imran Nawaz, Ørsted’s Senior Advisor and Community Benefit Fund Manager, said:
“The Burbo Bank Extension Community Fund continues to support projects that make a real and lasting difference to local communities. From tackling social isolation to supporting environmental action and improving renewable energy upgrades for community buildings, this latest round demonstrates the incredible impact that local organisations can have when they’re given the opportunity to bring their ideas to life.”
