A £19,000 grant from the Walney Extension Community Fund has transformed The Roods Playing Field in Warton into a vibrant community space. Working with local volunteers and Lancaster City Council, the project introduced inclusive play equipment, improved accessibility, enhanced signage, and created a wildflower meadow and orchard. The revitalised space now provides a safe, welcoming place where children and families can play, socialise and connect with nature, with around 1,500 people expected to benefit each year.
Helen Brister, Chairperson at Lancaster City Council, said:
“Thanks to the Walney Extension Community Fund, The Roods Playing Field has been transformed from an underused space with poor accessibility into an exciting and accessible play area. It has created a safe and welcoming environment where children and their families can socialise, play and connect with nature.”
Why it matters: This project has created an inclusive outdoor space that will benefit local families for years to come, encouraging healthier lifestyles, stronger community connections and greater access to nature.
