Landfill Communities Fund

Supporting communities and the environment

The Landfill Communities Fund (LCF) is an innovative tax credit scheme that enables landfill operators to contribute funding towards community and environmental projects across England and Northern Ireland.

Introduced alongside Landfill Tax in 1996, the LCF has supported thousands of projects, helping to improve community facilities, protect the natural environment and create lasting benefits for local people.

GrantScape has deep roots in the Landfill Communities Fund and today manages landfill community funding programmes on behalf of a number of landfill operators.

Celebrating 30 years of the Landfill Communities Fund

2026 marks 30 years since the Landfill Communities Fund was established.

For more than 30 years, the LCF has invested in communities and environments across England and Northern Ireland, helping to fund projects that make a meaningful and lasting difference to local people and places. At GrantScape, we are proud to have played a part in that story. As an enrolled Environmental Body, we work with landfill operators to turn their contributions into meaningful investment in local communities.

Throughout the LCF’s 30th anniversary year, we’ll be celebrating some of the projects, partnerships and people that demonstrate the difference this funding can make.

How does the Landfill Communities Fund work?

Landfill operators can make voluntary contributions to enrolled Environmental Bodies, such as GrantScape, and receive a Landfill Tax credit against qualifying contributions. Environmental Bodies then use LCF monies to support projects that meet the objectives of the scheme. ENTRUST regulates Environmental Bodies and projects on behalf of HM Revenue & Customs.

GrantScape manages LCF programmes on behalf of several landfill operators, providing support throughout the funding process, from programme design and application management through to assessment, grant monitoring, reporting and communications.

This helps our partners deliver their funding effectively while ensuring communities can access investment that creates meaningful, lasting impact.

What can Landfill Communities Fund grants support?

LCF funding can support a range of eligible community and environmental projects.

The exact criteria vary between individual funding programmes, but eligible projects can include:
