Access to safe, inclusive outdoor play in Warton has been transformed following improvements to The Roods Playing Field, supported by the Walney Extension Community Fund.
Backed by a £19,000 grant, the project has created a welcoming space where children and families can play, socialise and connect with nature.
Previously, the site offered very little for the local community. With no play equipment and poor accessibility, an uneven path, raised kerb and physical barriers made it difficult for many people to use. Despite being located close to housing and a primary school, it remained largely underused.
Driven by local passion and determination, The Friends of The Roods initiated the transformation, which was project managed by Lancaster City Council. Through extensive fundraising efforts, the group secured almost £60,000 to bring the project to life. 
This incredible achievement was formally recognised in July 2025, when Emma Taylor was awarded Fundraiser of the Year for her work with Friends of The Roods, highlighting the dedication and commitment behind the project.
Today, the space tells a very different story.
The playing field now features a range of play equipment, including swings, an accessible roundabout
and a multi-play unit, creating opportunities for children of all ages and abilities. A fully accessible path with a dropped kerb ensures the space can be used by everyone, while improved signage makes the park more visible and welcoming.
Nature is also at the heart of the space. A wildflower meadow and orchard, planted with support from the local school, help children connect with the environment while building a sense of ownership and pride in their community.
The impact has been clear. The park is now regularly used by local families, with children who once played in the street now having a safe and dedicated place to go. The project is
expected to benefit around 1,500 people each year, providing a lasting resource for the rural community.

“Thanks to the Walney Extension Community Fund, The Roods Playing Field has been transformed from an underused space with poor accessibility into an exciting and accessible play area. It has created a safe and welcoming environment where children and their families can socialise, play and connect with nature.”
The project also highlights the power of partnership. The application was submitted by Lancaster City Council, working closely with local volunteers and Friends of The Roods to bring the vision to life. Together with elected representatives and the wider community, the project demonstrates what can be achieved when organisations and residents work towards a shared goal.
Ultimately, The Roods Playing Field is more than just a playground. It is a space that continues to bring people together, support healthier lifestyles and create lasting connections within the community.
