Inspiring Children Through Nature

Fund: Hallburn Wind Farm Community Fund (administered by GrantScape)

As GrantScape celebrates 20 years of empowering communities, the Hallburn Wind Farm Community Fund is a perfect example of how local partnerships continue to create lasting impact.

Since 2019, the Hallburn Wind Farm Community Fund has provided annual support to the Tree-mendous Learning Charity, helping hundreds of children in North Cumbria connect with nature and develop life skills through outdoor learning.

Tree-mendous Learning works with local primary schools to deliver hands-on forest school sessions that build children’s confidence, communication, and resilience. Activities range from bushcraft, foraging, and pond-dipping to creating bug hotels and bird boxes, all designed to nurture a love and respect for the environment.

The most recent grant of £9,365 is funding the 2025 Nature’s Classroom project, enabling 330 children across five local schools to experience a series of high-quality nature sessions at the Learning Forest in Longtown. The grant also covers transport costs, ensuring that every child, regardless of background, can take part.

Teachers and parents consistently praise the programme for its impact on children’s wellbeing and education. One headteacher explained: “As a small school, our budget is extremely limited, so the funding from Hallburn Community Fund enables our children to have the environmental learning and personal growth that working in the Learning Forest allows – we hugely appreciate it.”

With around 1,900 young people benefitting since 2018, the charity’s work has become an integral part of the local school calendar. Thanks to the continued support of the Hallburn Wind Farm Community Fund, administered by GrantScape, Tree-mendous Learning is helping to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards while improving the health and happiness of local children.
