Access to Clophill Lakes Nature Reserve has been transformed with the creation of a new boardwalk and viewing platform, enabling visitors to explore the site safely while protecting sensitive wetland habitats.
Supported by a £55,000 grant from GrantScape’s Investing in Nature Fund, the project has created a high-quality, accessible route through an area that was previously difficult to navigate, particularly during wet conditions. 
The boardwalk crosses wet grassland and woodland between the site’s two main lakes, which frequently floods and would otherwise be inaccessible for much of the year. As a result, visitors can now enjoy the reserve all year round, with improved access for people of all abilities.
The new structure forms a key part of the main circular walking route around the lakes and helps connect the reserve to existing public footpaths from the village. It also provides a safe and designated route, reducing the impact of footfall on fragile habitats and helping to protect local wildlife.
A viewing platform has been incorporated into the design, offering visitors the opportunity to take in views across the lake and observe wildlife, including nesting birds such as sand martins and oystercatchers.
Since opening in April 2025, the reserve has seen significant use. Initial estimates showed that over 8,000 people visited the site within the first three weeks, demonstrating strong local demand and the immediate value of improved access.
Following the initial installation, the boardwalk was tragically destroyed in an arson attack. However, the response from the local community was overwhelmingly positive, with strong support and donations helping to restore and enhance the route alongside insurance funding. The rebuilt boardwalk continues to play a vital role in the reserve, forming part of an expanded accessible loop that further improves access for visitors of all abilities.

The project is already making a noticeable difference for the local community. Visitors have highlighted the improved accessibility, particularly for families with young children and those using mobility aids, as well as the ability to enjoy nature in a safe and welcoming environment.
By balancing access with conservation, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can enhance visitor experience while safeguarding the natural environment.
