Staff Spotlight: CEO Reflections on 20 Years of GrantScape

Looking back, moving forward 

As GrantScape celebrates its 20th anniversary, CEO Matt Young reflects on the charity’s journey so far, what makes its work unique, and the values that continue to drive its success. 

“It’s always been about people” 

“When you look back at two decades of community funding, the numbers are impressive: over £120 million awarded and more than 2,000 projects supported. But what really stands out are the people behind those projects. 

Every grant represents someone’s idea to make life a little better where they live. That is what keeps our work meaningful.” 

Since joining GrantScape, Matt has led a team dedicated to fairness, transparency, and lasting local benefit. The focus, he says, has always been on collaboration between developers, funders, and the communities themselves. 

“Our Advisory Panels are at the heart of this process. They are made up of local volunteers who understand the needs of their area better than anyone. Their insight ensures that funding decisions are guided by genuine community priorities.” 

Milestones and moments 

From small village hall improvements to large-scale environmental projects, GrantScape’s portfolio reflects the diversity of the UK’s communities. 

“Reaching the £100 million milestone was a proud moment, but what makes it special is the legacy. Many of the projects we supported years ago are still running today, providing ongoing benefit.” 

He also highlights the organisation’s partnerships with renewable energy developers such as Ørsted, Statkraft, Infinis, and RWE as a major part of its evolution. 

“Those relationships have allowed us to deliver community benefit on a national scale while maintaining local decision-making and accountability.” 

The next chapter 

As GrantScape looks ahead to the next 20 years, Matt’s focus is on embracing innovation and keeping the charity’s processes simple and accessible. 

“We are always looking for ways to improve. Digital tools are helping us make the application process smoother and more transparent, and we are exploring new ways to measure the long-term impact of every grant we award.” 

He adds: 

“What will not change are our core values of fairness, independence, and impact. These principles have guided us from day one and they will continue to shape everything we do.”
