Our Story – The History of GrantScape

Supporting communities for over 20 years 

GrantScape’s journey began long before our official launch in 2005. Our roots stretch back to earlier organisations that shared one simple goal: helping communities thrive through targeted funding and support. 

From small beginnings to a national reach 

In the late 90s, a group of dedicated grant managers and community specialists recognised the growing need for transparent, fair, and community-led funding. In 2005, these efforts came together under one name – GrantScape – creating a single, independent charity focused on managing Community Benefit Funds across the UK. 

Building partnerships that last 

What began with a single donor company has grown into partnerships with over 20 developers and businesses, including renewable energy leaders such as Ørsted, Statkraft, Infinis, and RWE. Together, we’ve delivered community benefit funds that bring real, lasting improvements to local areas, from new community halls and playgrounds to wildlife restoration and training opportunities. 

A legacy of impact 

Over the years, we’ve awarded over £120 million in grants to more than 2,000 projects, helping to create stronger, more connected, and more sustainable communities. 

Among our proudest moments was reaching the £100 million milestone in total grants awarded, a testament to the dedication of our partners, advisory panels, and the hundreds of community groups we’ve worked alongside. 

Looking ahead 

As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we remain as committed as ever to our founding principles: fairness, independence, transparency, and impact. 

We’ll continue to expand our partnerships, support local skills and education, and champion projects that protect our environment and improve people’s lives.
